Non solo una rock band, ma un vero e proprio progetto multimedia targato Sudafrica, miscela di immagini energiche e distopiche, anche metafora di questo tempo. Ecco i Future Radio che abbiamo deciso di raccontare attraverso il loro album di lancio, “Freedom” avvenuto qualche settimana fa.

“Freedom” è concept album di 15 tracce e include i loro primi tre singoli “Fire with Fire”, “Run Baby, Run” e “Break Us”. Come suggerisce il nome, l’album riflette sull’idea di libertà e l’ascoltatore in un viaggio di liberazione, di emancipazione, di redenzione.

L’ultimo singolo estratto è “DOI”. Questa traccia punk rock è una dichiarazione di indipendenza emotivamente carica, che annuncia la fine di una relazione passata prepotente.

Un riff ritmato introduce la canzone e si ripete nel background di tutta la canzone. Dal punto di vista lirico, il ritornello si propone come una vigorosa, diretta e onesta dichiarazione di autonomia, supportata da una spinta ritmica assertiva. Il ponte strumentale si scompone in una sensazione dubstep a metà tempo, che si aggiunge ai vari elementi di genere trasversale che si ritrovano un po’ in tutte le tracce.

“‘DOI’ è stata la prima canzone che ho scritto per il nostro album di debutto”, ricorda Johnny Future, frontman e cantautore dei Future Radio. “Mi sono sempre piaciute le canzoni che presentano un forte impatto melodico. Band come gli AC / DC e, più recentemente, i Kings of Leon, hanno perfezionato l’arte di scrivere riff memorabili e, come chitarrista, sono attratto da questo”.

Ogni traccia dell’album è accompagnata da immagini create dall’artista visivo, e co-fondatore di Future Radio, Drikus Roets. Lo stile dell’animazione è vagamente basato sui primi DC Comics. “Ciò che ci distingue dalle altre band è che poniamo tanta enfasi sulle immagini quanto sulla musica. Il lavoro di Johnny è la musica, il mio sono le immagini “, spiega Roets. Non a caso, “DOI” è proprio nel mezzo della tracklist di questo concept album, perché rappresenta il punto cruciale della storia in cui il personaggio principale, Johnny Future, si trova davanti a un punto di svolta, di quelli che ti cambiano la vita.

Future Radio introduces their debut album, “Freedom”. In the same vein as their music videos, the show deals with the concept of emancipation and encourages the passionate pursuit of purpose. Through a combination of words, music and visuals, Future Radio brings an energetic and theatrical experience to their audience.

Future Radio’s album  includes their first three singles “Fire with Fire”, “Run Baby, Run” and “Break Us”. As the name suggests, the album deals with the idea of “Freedom” and is intended to take the listener on a liberation voyage.

“DOI”, is the latest release from the debut album. This punk rock track is an emotionally charged declaration of independence, announcing the end of an overbearing past relationship. 

A melodic riff introduces the song and repeats throughout the track as a secondary hook. Lyrically, the chorus is a vigorous, direct and honest pronouncement of autonomy, supported by an assertive four-on-the-floor rhythmic drive. The instrumental bridge breaks down into a half-time dubstep feel, which adds to the various cross-genre elements that are prominent across all the tracks of the band’s debut album.     

“DOI was the first song I wrote for our debut album,” recalls Johnny Future, the frontman and songwriter of Future Radio. “I’ve always liked songs that feature a strong melodic motif. Bands like AC/DC, and more recently Kings of Leon, have perfected the art of writing memorable riffs, and as a guitarist, I’m drawn to that”. 

Each track on the album is accompanied by visuals created by visual artist and Future Radio co-founder, Drikus Roets. The animation style is loosely based on early DC Comics. “What distinguishes us from other bands is that we place as much emphasis on the visuals as we do on the music. Johnny’s job is the music, mine is the visuals,” explains Roets. Intentionally, “DOI”is right in the middle of the tracklisting on this concept album, because it signifies the pivotal point in the story where the lead character, Johnny Future, is faced with a life-changing decision.
